Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform experienced outages after undersea fiber optic cables in the Red Sea were severed. This incident prompted the company to reroute internet traffic, leading to slower speeds and delays for users. The disruption has particularly affected traffic originating from or destined for Asia and Europe through the Middle East, possibly causing further connectivity issues.
Microsoft mentioned that fixing undersea cable damages can be a lengthy process. Meanwhile, they are actively monitoring the situation, adjusting network routes, and optimizing traffic flow to minimize impact. They promise daily updates, or more frequent ones if necessary.
As the second-largest cloud provider globally, behind Amazon Web Services, Azure has had to divert traffic along alternative pathways, resulting in higher-than-normal latency and slower response times.
