A man drove his vehicle through the front entrance of a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and fired at least 10 rounds, resulting in one fatality, according to local law enforcement. The suspect exited the vehicle, wielding an assault-style weapon. An exchange of gunfire with officers ensued, leading to the suspect’s death at the scene. Authorities anticipate discovering additional victims among the debris of the burned church.
The suspect’s identity has not been publicly disclosed, but police describe him as a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan. Witnesses reported seeing thick smoke billowing from the building as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, with emergency vehicles parked nearby.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her grief over the tragedy, stating, “My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.” National officials, including U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and President Donald Trump, issued statements acknowledging the incident. Bondi described the attack as “heartbreaking and chilling,” while Trump suggested it was a targeted assault against Christians and called for an immediate end to violence in the country.
Grand Blanc, a town with a population of around 7,700, is located approximately 60 miles northwest of Detroit.
