Michael Fassbender aimed to step into the Wasteland with a role in Mad Max: Fury Road, but things didn’t go as planned.
In a recent conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he reflected on his audition for the film, describing it as one of his most challenging experiences.
“Oh my God. It was terrible,” Fassbender recalled.

Fassbender detailed how the audition got off to a bad start even before he stepped into the room, admitting he got lost en route to the Warner Bros. studio.
“I was supposed to go to Warner Bros. in the Valley, which sounds straightforward,” he explained. “But I ended up being nearly an hour late. I was definitely not in the right mindset.”
When he finally arrived, he encountered George Miller’s acting coach, which only added to the awkwardness of the situation.
“It was so painful,” Fassbender described the experience with the coach. “Having been classically trained, I have my own way of approaching roles, focusing on the character’s objectives and actions. It felt like he was teaching me something I already knew—it was frustrating.”

Fassbender humorously shared how the coach wanted him to “physicalize” his performance after saying a line, which only complicated matters further since he couldn’t grasp the coach’s instructions.
“I was eager to leave. Clearly, I didn’t land the role,” Fassbender joked. “Tom Hardy got it and rightfully so.”
As he pointed out, Hardy portrayed “Mad Max” Rockatansky in Fury Road, a film celebrated as one of the most outstanding action movies of the 21st century.
Maybe Fassbender will get another chance to enter the Wasteland if Miller plans another installment in the Mad Max franchise.
