Melania Trump, the wife of U.S. President Donald Trump, sent a heartfelt letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting the struggles faced by children in Ukraine and Russia. The letter was personally handed to Putin during their meeting in Alaska, according to two White House officials. Melania, who was born in Slovenia, was not part of the Alaska trip. Officials declined to reveal the full content of the letter, only stating that it referenced the abductions of children caused by the conflict in Ukraine.
The revelation of the letter’s existence was new, as it hadn’t been reported before. Russia’s detention of Ukrainian children remains a highly sensitive issue for Ukraine. Kyiv describes the forced removal of tens of thousands of children to Russia or areas controlled by Russia as a war crime, which they argue constitutes genocide under the UN definition. Russia claims it is protecting vulnerable children from the chaos of war.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United Nations Human Rights Office has documented widespread suffering inflicted on millions of Ukrainian children and violations of their rights. The leaders met for nearly three hours at a U.S. military base in Anchorage but did not reach any agreement on a ceasefire in Ukraine.
