On March 2nd, Meituan’s artificial intelligence research team, GN06, formerly known as an AI startup called Light Year, announced the launch of the public beta for their first AI-native browser, Tabbit. This signifies the company’s latest effort to expand beyond its core life services into AI-driven applications.
Tabbit combines web browsing, extensive web searches, AI-powered conversations, and complex task management all within one platform. During the public testing phase, which is free and open to all without requiring an invitation, users can download the browser directly from its official site.
The embedded intelligent assistant in Tabbit can automatically execute sophisticated tasks based on user commands. These include extracting data from various business platforms to generate analytical reports, auto-filling forms across different SaaS systems, and conducting deep web searches to produce organized research documents. The browser leverages several large language models—such as LongCat, DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi, Doubao, Qwen, and Minimax—allowing users to toggle between them based on their specific needs.
To make switching easier, Tabbit supports one-click data migration from popular browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Edge while maintaining the familiar Chrome user experience and operational logic.
The startup behind this project, Light Year, was founded in February 2023 by Wang Huiwen, one of the co-founders of Meituan. The company initially received an investment of $50 million. On June 29, 2023, Meituan acquired Light Year fully for approximately CNY 2.1 billion (around USD 306 million), aiming to develop new AI applications that go beyond the company’s primary business offerings.
