Launched in 2022, Matter has been making waves in the smart device industry by providing a simplified approach to connecting smart gadgets. Since its initial rollout, the Connectivity Standards Alliance has been actively delivering updates to this interoperability standard, enhancing compatibility across a wider array of devices while resolving various issues. The latest iteration, Matter 1.4, focuses on improving energy management features and streamlining the process of establishing a robust smart home network.

For those utilizing Matter and aiming to reduce energy expenditures, the energy tracking capabilities introduced in version 1.3 are now available for a greater variety of devices with the release of Matter 1.4. This update enables energy monitoring and management for several types of devices, including:

  • Solar Solutions: Items that utilize solar energy, including inverters, individual and grid-connected panel arrays, as well as hybrid systems.
  • Battery Solutions: Devices such as wall-mounted batteries, energy storage units, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Heat Pumps
  • Water Heating Appliances

In addition to the newly supported devices, Matter 1.4 enhances features for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). Users can now schedule charging times for their vehicles, allowing for cost-effective charging based on local utility rates. Moreover, smart thermostats will now support predefined settings and scheduling, including a dedicated vacation mode.

Matter 1.4’s focus isn’t solely on energy optimization; it also lays the groundwork for future enhancements in network capabilities. Home networking devices such as routers, modems, and access points can now incorporate better support for Matter-compatible gadgets. This means that users should experience an easier process when integrating new devices into their Thread networks without the hassle of starting from scratch. More updates on this development are expected soon.
