Last year, Trump dismissed then-U.S. Archivist Colleen Shogan. Rubio has served in multiple positions within the Trump administration. The U.S. Archivist’s role is to manage government records.
Recently, the National Archives and Records Administration announced that Marco Rubio is no longer serving as the acting archivist. The archivist oversees federal records and leads the National Archives, an agency that Trump once criticized after it reported his mishandling of classified documents in 2022.
After Trump assumed office last year, he removed Colleen Shogan and appointed Rubio as the interim head of the archives—a role he’s worn alongside others during his time in office. His various positions, often the subject of jokes and memes online, highlight the level of trust Trump places in him, despite their past rivalry when competing for the Republican presidential nomination a decade ago.
Rubio played a key part in Trump’s efforts to oversee Venezuela following the detention of Nicolás Maduro, as well as in the efforts to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). He also supported Trump’s aggressive stance against pro-Palestinian demonstrations by revoking visas and green cards.
Rubio has stepped down from his temporary role at the National Archives in accordance with the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, which limits the duration of service in Senate-confirmed positions when served in an acting capacity. His responsibilities have been delegated to James Byron, a senior adviser to the archivist.
In 2022, the FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to investigate the removal of official presidential records after his presidency. The National Archives had been pursuing the documents. Trump faced indictment in connection with the case, but charges were dropped following his 2024 election victory.
