Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced an outage on Monday, disrupting connectivity for numerous companies worldwide and affecting several popular websites and apps, including Fortnite and Snapchat. In an update on its status page, AWS confirmed increased error rates and delays across multiple services in the US-EAST-1 region.
Perplexity, Coinbase, and Robinhood pointed to AWS as the root cause of the disruptions. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas announced on X that their platform was down due to an AWS issue and that efforts were underway to resolve it.
AWS offers on-demand computing resources, data storage, and various digital services to businesses, governments, and individuals. When its servers go down, platforms that depend on its cloud infrastructure can stop functioning properly. AWS competes with cloud providers like Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
Requests for comments from AWS and Amazon went unanswered. Downdetector reported outages affecting Amazon’s shopping site, Prime Video, and Alexa. Gaming platforms such as Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans also experienced downtime, along with financial services like PayPal’s Venmo and Chime. Lyft’s app, a competitor to Uber, was unavailable for many users across the U.S. Additionally, Signal confirmed that their messaging platform was impacted by the outage, as shared by its President, Meredith Whittaker.
