Zohran Mamdani, New York’s incoming progressive mayor, stated on Sunday that he still considers President Donald Trump a fascist, despite their cordial meeting at the White House.
“I’ve held this view before, and I maintain it today,” Mamdani told NBC News. The Democratic Socialist, who was elected last Friday, met with the Republican president in a rare moment of diplomacy, setting aside months of mutual hostility and vowing to work together for the city’s future.
During the White House press conference, Trump, who had previously suggested Mamdani should be deported—despite his Ugandan roots—intervened when Mamdani was asked if he still viewed Trump as a fascist.
“That’s okay. Just say it. It’s simpler,” Trump remarked. “It’s easier than trying to explain.”
In his NBC interview on Sunday morning, Mamdani elaborated on the exchange.
“What I appreciated about the conversation was that we weren’t shy about voicing our disagreements and the political issues that brought us here,” he said. “The meeting was productive, and it repeatedly centered on key campaign themes: housing prices, childcare costs, grocery prices, and utility bills.”
Despite earlier threats to cut federal funding to New York City and deploying the National Guard, Trump praised Mamdani’s historic election victory and expressed confidence in his ability to lead.
“We’re going to help him realize everyone’s dream—having a strong and safe New York,” Trump said.
