In December, with the launch of the iOS 18.2 update, Apple revamped the Mail app for iPhones. However, the enhancements were not extended to iPads and Macs until now. With the recent developer beta updates for macOS 15.4 and iPadOS 18.4, Apple has finally addressed this oversight, making the updates available for testers.
The most significant improvement in the Mail app is the introduction of email categories. Your inbox will now organize messages into four distinct sections, making it easier to manage your communications. Here’s how it works:
- Primary: This is for personal messages and important, time-sensitive content.
- Transactions: This category captures confirmation emails, receipts, and notifications about shipments.
- Updates: Here you’ll see all emails that you’ve subscribed to, like newsletters, news updates, and social media communications.
- Promotions: This section will include marketing materials such as coupons and sales alerts.
Interestingly, if any emails within the Transactions, Updates, or Promotions categories contain time-sensitive information, they will also be displayed under the Primary section. Additionally, Apple has drawn inspiration from social media by allowing users to view messages from specific senders in a focused format.

According to Apple, when users open a message from the Transactions, Updates, or Promotions categories, a summary view of correspondence from that specific sender will be displayed. This feature is particularly useful for keeping track of alerts from financial institutions, displaying all related transactions in a convenient, vertically-scrolling card format.
For those who prefer a different approach, it’s possible to disable categories and revert to the traditional list view that shows emails in the order they arrived in the inbox. This organizational method is designed to separate less important messages from crucial communications, although it may not be flawless.
The arrival of the updated Mail experience on iPads and Macs is a welcome change, addressing a significant gap in functionality. While iPhones have had this revamped interface for some time, it was frustrating not to have a uniform experience across devices.
With the rollout of the macOS 15.4 and iPadOS 18.4 developer beta updates, users can look forward to a more cohesive experience soon. It’s only a matter of time before the beta testing phase concludes and the new Mail features become widely available across Apple’s mobile and desktop platforms.
Beyond these updates, Mac users will also benefit from additional AI features in the Mail app, such as email summaries, smart replies, and priority messaging.
