Mac Monitors Might Finally Get The Upgrade They Need

Recent speculation indicates that Apple might be set to enhance the display technology across various devices. If these rumors hold true, we could see the debut of a 24-inch iMac and a revamped Studio Display featuring a 90Hz refresh rate in 2025.

Information from an unnamed source was shared on the Upgrade podcast, hosted by Myke Hurley and Jason Snell. The insider outlined a timeline whereby Apple plans to unveil its M3 iPad Air, incorporating an upgraded 90Hz display. This would be followed by the introduction of a 24-inch iMac equipped with the same technology, and finally, a 27-inch Studio Display with the new panel. Besides the enhancements for the Macs, the next-generation iPad Air is also rumored to receive the jump from 60Hz to 90Hz.

While this remains firmly in the realm of speculation, it certainly piques interest.

According to Hurley and Snell, the source mentioned, “I have news on screen improvements for the next generation of the M3 iPad Air. Apple is developing a higher refresh rate LCD with a new liquid motion panel set at around 90Hz. They’re also exploring the possibility of implementing this advancement in other models, including a 24-inch iMac and an upcoming Studio Display.”

Currently, all three anticipated models utilize displays with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. There is significant anticipation for the Studio Display to receive an update since it has remained unchanged since its initial release in March 2022. However, additional confirmations about 90Hz display technology across Apple’s product lineup have yet to emerge.

Analyst Ross Young has also connected the expected 120Hz ProMotion display with the upcoming iPhone 17 series, as noted in reports from 9to5Mac. This seems to be the only other mention of a high-refresh-rate device imminent for release.

Further insights from Bloomberg suggest that the new iPad Air could launch in early 2025. Following Apple’s recent announcement of a 24-inch iMac featuring the M4 chip, it is unlikely that another such device will launch until around the same time next year. The rumors regarding the Studio Display, however, remain sparse. Young had previously indicated in April 2023 that plans for a new Studio Display incorporating 120Hz ProMotion technology and mini-LED backlighting were shelved.
