Whenever my father needs to order his favorite perfume, manage online banking, or arrange a ride, he usually calls on my siblings for help with his phone. For him, navigating modern apps is akin to wandering through a complicated digital landscape.
In response to this challenge, Lyft, a leading ride-hailing company in the U.S., has launched a service specifically designed with seniors in mind. Named Lyft Silver, this service provides a streamlined experience within the main app, featuring an easier user interface and added accessibility features.
How does Lyft Silver work?
To begin using Lyft Silver, simply open the app, tap the “You” icon in the bottom right corner, and choose Lyft Silver. This action transforms the app's interface into a much more straightforward design with fewer options, intuitive controls, and larger text.

The text size has been enlarged by 1.4 times, and the main screen features just two buttons: one for booking a ride and another for scheduling one. According to the company, “The goal is to minimize visual distractions that may hinder users' success or create confusion.”
If older riders need assistance, a prominently displayed “Get Help” button is located in the upper right corner. Tapping this button connects users directly with a customer service agent available between 8 am and 9 pm EST.
What’s special about it?
In terms of ride options, Lyft Silver provides two choices: Standard and Extra Comfort. Importantly, the company has set specific guidelines for vehicles servicing older passengers, ensuring their comfort and safety.

For instance, the vehicle's step-in height must not exceed 18 inches, and the seat height should also remain below this limit. Additionally, the cars must be spacious and comfortable—trucks, sports cars, or utility vehicles will not be used in this service.
During the ride, details can be shared with trusted contacts, such as caregivers or family members, for added reassurance. Initially, Lyft will also offer discounts for senior riders in collaboration with organizations like AltaMed, Urban League, NOAH, SAGE, and Self Help for the Elderly.
Lyft Silver will be available for early access starting May 5th across the U.S. within the main Android and iOS app. Participants in the testing phase can send an invite or gift link to loved ones via SMS.
