The University of East London (UEL) has appointed Aamer Ahmad Sarfraz, a British-Pakistani peer known as Lord Sarfraz of Kensington, to serve as its new Chancellor starting August 1, 2025.
A respected figure in both the House of Lords and the realms of business, public service, and philanthropy, Lord Sarfraz offers a wealth of international experience at a critical phase of UEL’s development, according to a statement from the university sent to Geo News.
In his role as Chancellor, he will act as a representative and advocate for the university, supporting its students, mission, and strategic goals.
This appointment coincides with UEL’s efforts to realize its Vision 2028, a bold decade-long plan aimed at establishing the UK’s top careers-oriented university with a strong emphasis on diversity, sustainability, and innovation.
Professor Amanda Broderick, Vice Chancellor and President of UEL, shared: “Welcoming Lord Sarfraz as Chancellor marks a proud moment for UEL. He aligns perfectly with our dedication to creating a careers-focused environment where students from all backgrounds can succeed. His dedication to sustainability, especially our goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2030, reflects our shared values.
We are eager to collaborate with him to motivate our diverse student body and alumni, many of whom come from varied backgrounds, and are confident he will be a stellar ambassador for our mission and principles.”
Lord Sarfraz joined the House of Lords in 2019 and was created Baron Sarfraz of Kensington in 2020, making him one of the youngest peers at the time. He served as Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Singapore from 2022 to 2024 and is currently part of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy.
His entrepreneurial journey as a venture capitalist and founder of NetZeroAg, a company promoting sustainable farming in developing countries, aligns well with Vision 2028’s focus on economic empowerment and climate action. He also provides strategic guidance to several publicly traded tech firms involved in enterprise AI, cloud services, and electric vehicles, as well as multiple technology funds. Through the Lord Sarfraz Foundation, his philanthropic efforts focus on expanding opportunities and enhancing education.
Sarin holds degrees from Boston University, the London School of Economics, and the Royal College of Defence Studies.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Lord Sarfraz stated: “I am truly honored to become the next Chancellor of UEL and proud to follow in the footsteps of Shabir Randeree CBE. UEL has a storied history of serving its diverse communities by opening doors and equipping students with the skills to shape the future. I look forward to supporting its mission and nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators.”
This appointment comes amid ongoing growth at UEL, including its Careers Guarantee initiative, expansion of practical research centers, and increased social impact across East London and beyond.
