Johannesburg: A lightning storm hit a crowd of 150 people gathered at a festival north of Pretoria, resulting in two fatalities, according to local health authorities on Sunday. The incident took place Saturday night near the village of Mathibestad, roughly 70 kilometers (about 40 miles) from Pretoria, an area known for hosting an annual traditional celebration.
The North West health department stated that 150 individuals were brought to a health clinic after being struck by lightning during the event. Of those, two individuals died, and 13 others are in critical condition and have been transferred to a different healthcare facility.
Storm activity is common in this region of South Africa during the current summer season in the Southern Hemisphere.
