Jon Bernthal is gearing up to share more tales as the Punisher.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Bernthal will return to his iconic role as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, in a Marvel special set to air on Disney+. The project will be directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who is co-writing the script with Bernthal.
“It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story,” said Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, to EW. “It’s so exciting.”
Bernthal is not only returning as the Punisher in the special but will also reprise his role in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Punisher special is scheduled for release in 2026, coinciding with the anticipated second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
This Punisher special will be released under Marvel Studios’ Special Presentations banner. Marvel has previously delivered two specials on Disney+: Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Bernthal first took on the role of Frank Castle in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil. Following a tragic incident in which his family is murdered by gang members, Castle becomes the merciless vigilante known as the Punisher. Bernthal later starred in The Punisher, which aired for two seasons on Netflix from 2017 to 2019.

Disney is making a concerted effort to integrate the Marvel characters that originated on Netflix into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. Notably, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin are set to transition into Daredevil: Born Again, which is scheduled to premiere on March 4 on Disney+.
With Matt Murdock officially part of the MCU again, it raises the possibility for Marvel to bring back other members of Daredevil’s circle from The Defenders, such as Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones).
