A Pakistani government official has informed the National Assembly that repairing damaged undersea internet cables off the coast of Yemen could take between four and five weeks. Zarrar Hasham, the Federal Secretary of Information Technology and Telecommunication, explained during a meeting of the NA Standing Committee that several submarine cables in the region had been severed, impacting connectivity.
He clarified that two cables supplying Pakistan had been affected and that the repair process might last up to a month. The situation in Yemen is complex, with reports of damage to four to five cables in the area, which has compelled service providers to reroute bandwidth through alternative pathways to maintain service continuity.
Earlier this month, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) issued a statement indicating potential disruptions in internet services across the country due to submarine cable cuts near Jeddah in Saudi waters. The affected cables, SMW4 and IMEWE, are critical links that connect Pakistan to the global internet infrastructure.
International partners are actively working to restore the damaged cables, and local teams have arranged alternative bandwidth solutions to reduce the impact on users.
