Iran announced on Tuesday that 120 citizens deported from the U.S. as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts are scheduled to return home this week. Hossein Noushabadi, a consular affairs official at the foreign ministry, told the Tasnim news agency, “Over the next few days, 120 individuals will be deported and repatriated.” He also noted that the U.S. immigration authorities plan to send approximately 400 Iranians, most of whom entered illegally, back to Iran.
The New York Times reported that around 100 Iranian asylum seekers are being deported under a rare agreement between Washington and Tehran, a deal formed after several months of negotiations. The US State Department did not offer an immediate comment in response to AFP inquiries.
According to the report, a U.S.-chartered aircraft left Louisiana Monday evening and is expected to land in Tehran later Tuesday, with a stopover in Qatar. The deportations are described as “the most forceful effort yet by the Trump administration to remove migrants, even to countries with severe human rights concerns.” Earlier this year, the U.S. already deported several Iranians, including many Christians, to Costa Rica and Panama.
