Iran on Monday dismissed US accusations claiming Tehran attempted to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in Mexico, calling the allegations “ridiculous.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei described the claims as “completely false” and suggested they are part of an effort to damage Iran’s positive relations with other nations.
After the US made the allegations on Friday, Israel thanked Mexican authorities for cracking down on a terrorist network allegedly directed by Iran. However, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry later clarified that it had received no information concerning such a plot. Iran’s embassy in Mexico also dismissed the accusations as “a total lie.”
An unnamed US official alleged that Iran’s elite Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps orchestrated the plot in late 2024, which was reportedly foiled earlier this year. The supposed conspiracy involved recruiting operatives through Iran’s embassy in Venezuela, where President Nicolas Maduro maintains a cooperative relationship with Tehran.
Baqaei reaffirmed that “the entire story was made up.”
Earlier in June, Israel initiated an unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran, leading to a 12-day conflict that briefly involved US-led strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. A ceasefire between Iran and Israel has been in effect since June 24.
