Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on Wednesday that Iran has no plans to execute people in connection with ongoing anti-government protests. When questioned about the protests, he told Fox News in an interview on the Special Report with Bret Baier that “hanging is out of the question,” emphasizing that “there is no plan for hanging at all.” Despite his comments, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights Society reported that executions by hanging are common within Iranian prisons.
In a separate interview with CBS News earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned he would take “very strong action” if Iran begins hanging protesters, although he did not provide further details. Trump added on Wednesday that he had received reports indicating that the crackdown-related killings are decreasing and that there currently seems to be no intention of carrying out large-scale executions.
The protests represent one of the most significant challenges to Iran’s clerical regime since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. They started as economic grievances and have since escalated into calls for the overthrow of the longstanding religious leadership. The unrest marks a major test for Iran’s ruling hierarchy, with the government blaming foreign sanctions for economic struggles and accusing foreign adversaries of meddling domestically.
According to HRANA, a U.S.-based human rights organization, at least 2,403 protesters and 147 government-affiliated individuals have been confirmed dead so far. The group also reports over 18,137 arrests.
