Apple is just a few weeks away from unveiling the iPhone 17 series, and most of the buzz so far has centered around rumors of a design overhaul. There’s also a lot of excitement about the iPhone 17 Air, but it appears the iPhone 17 Pro might steal the spotlight with its advanced zoom capabilities.
What’s the main attraction?
Historically, the “Pro” models have emphasized high-quality camera performance and software features that enhance photography. According to a trusted leakster in China, the iPhone 17 Pro could boast the most powerful telephoto camera on any smartphone to date.
So far, leaks suggest a new telephoto sensor capable of delivering up to 8x optical zoom. To put that into perspective, the iPhone 16 Pro models max out at 5x zoom, while some Android competitors offer either the same 5x or in rare cases, a 10x optical zoom.
Another significant upgrade could be the camera sensor’s resolution. Rumors point to a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, which is four times larger than the 12-megapixel zoom camera found on the current-generation iPhone 16 series.
This boost in sensor size for zoom photography means users could capture more detailed images at full resolution or benefit from improved quality at 12 megapixels through pixel binning technology.
In terms of competition, the Google Pixel 9 Pro already offers a 48-megapixel telephoto lens with a 5x optical zoom, while the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra features two telephoto lenses capable of 3x and 5x zoom ranges. Additionally, Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra introduced a 10x optical zoom two years ago. It will be interesting to see how Apple’s rumored camera enhancements will intensify the race among premium smartphones.
As for pricing, the iPhone 17 Pro might see a $50 increase, which could actually be a discount depending on how Apple adjusts its pricing strategy. Overall, the upcoming release is expected to raise the bar in mobile photography, setting new standards for rivals to follow.
