Indonesia has lifted the ban on Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot, allowing it to resume services after a three-week hiatus. The government made this decision following assurances from X Corp to improve compliance with local laws concerning content moderation, particularly related to inappropriate images.
The suspension was initially implemented due to concerns over the platform’s potential to generate pornographic content, marking Indonesia as the first country to block access to Grok over such issues.
A spokesperson from Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs explained that the reactivation of the service is conditional and will be closely monitored. They emphasized that the approval is based on X’s written commitments to enhance service quality and curb misuse, rather than indicating a comprehensive approval.
X and its subsidiary, xAI—which manages Grok—did not immediately respond to inquiries sent outside regular business hours. The move follows global criticism from European and Asian regulators regarding sexualized content produced by Grok, with some authorities initiating investigations into the platform’s practices.
Senior Ministry official Alexander Sabar stated, “Access to Grok services is being reinstated conditionally after X Corp provided a formal commitment with specific steps for service improvement and abuse prevention. This is the basis for ongoing evaluation, not a final approval.”
He further noted that X has put in place several layered measures to address misuse, with continuous verification underway.
