Christmas festivities took a dark turn in India when a violent mob vandalized holiday decorations in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. The incident occurred on December 24, 2025, when around 30 to 40 masked individuals using wooden sticks attacked a mall setup with Christmas displays, ahead of the holiday. The mob, protesting alleged religious conversions in Kanker, stormed the mall during a statewide bandh. Video footage captured suspects tearing down holiday decor inside the shopping center.
Police responded swiftly, lodging a report based on a complaint from mall management, though the identities of the perpetrators remain unknown. In a related event in Assam’s Nalbari district, members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad Bajrang Dal vandalized a school preparing for Christmas, damaging decorations and setting some festival items on fire, also protesting against the celebrations.
Recently, the US government released a report labeling India a country of particular concern regarding religious freedoms, citing systemic discrimination and extremist policies aligned with Hindutva ideology. The report criticizes Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for implementing discriminatory measures against minorities, echoing longstanding activities of the RSS, which has a history of violence against Muslims and Sikhs.
Meanwhile, Christians worldwide continue to observe Christmas with devotion, taking part in traditional celebrations. In Pakistan, Christian communities held prayer services, with churches in Karachi decorated and protected by increased security. Similarly, in Lahore, festive lights adorned churches, and celebrations kicked off at midnight, emphasizing the worldwide spirit of the holiday.
