Team Cherry, the small but passionate group behind Hollow Knight, has been working tirelessly on its highly anticipated expansion, which has grown into a full-fledged sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong. It feels like we’ve been waiting forever, as this is the title that’s lingered on our list of upcoming releases longer than almost any other. Despite its indie roots, the buzz surrounding this game rivals that of major AAA titles on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. If you’re curious about why so many people are excited, here’s a look at what makes this game such a hot topic.
Release Date Announcement
After numerous delays, the wait is finally coming to an end. Hollow Knight: Silksong is scheduled to launch on September 4, 2025. The development team released a trailer that’s just under two minutes, revealing more gameplay and the moment fans have been hoping for—a confirmed release date. Along with the announcement, the trailer showcases new environments and mechanics, fueling even more anticipation.
Platforms
Following an extensive wait, Silksong will be available on nearly every major console. You’ll be able to play it on PS4, PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC. Fans of the original will be pleased to know that the game will be accessible across a wide range of devices, ensuring that players on different platforms can experience Hornet’s new adventure.
Game Trailers and Visuals
The initial reveal trailer from February 2019 showcased the game’s breathtaking animation and gameplay, focusing on Hornet, a character fans already know from the first Hollow Knight. Unlike The Knight, Hornet is able to speak, which adds a new layer of personality and depth to her character. The trailer also teased a variety of new enemies, bosses, NPCs, and quest-driven towns, hinting at a richer and more expansive world.
Later, during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase in 2022, a new trailer revealed that the game would be coming to more platforms and would be included in Xbox Game Pass from day one. While the trailer didn’t specify a release date, it emphasized a new goal: ascending to the peak of a haunted kingdom—paralleling the game’s original exploration downward. This shift in perspective promises a fresh take on the traditional Metroidvania formula.
Gameplay and Features
Silksong stays true to the beloved Metroidvania style, featuring a vast interconnected world filled with secrets. Hornet plays a central role, with her larger size and agility translating to faster movement, higher jumps, and the ability to climb ledges—marking a noticeable evolution from The Knight. She fights with her signature needle, offering a broader arsenal of attacks, and incorporates a unique crafting system. Collecting shell shards throughout her journey allows players to craft new weapons and tools, from explosive bombs to spike traps and thrown weapons.
Expect an increased emphasis on questing and NPC interactions, which will expand the game’s narrative depth. After finishing the game, players can unlock Silk Soul mode—a challenging new difficulty level that promises to test skills in a way similar to the original’s Steel Soul mode, but with its own twists.
What to Expect Next
Though the release date is set, preorders are not yet available across platforms. Fans can wishlist the game and stay tuned for updates on the official Silksong website. Importantly, those who backed the original Hollow Knight will receive Silksong for free as part of their rewards. Additionally, it will be included on Xbox Game Pass at launch, making it accessible to a broad audience from day one.
As the countdown begins, excitement continues to build for what promises to be another stunning adventure in the world of Hollow Knight.
