The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has announced a new policy requiring all undergraduate and graduate programs nationwide to include a three-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) starting in 2026. This mandate extends to both public and private higher education institutions, which are instructed to integrate the AI curriculum immediately.
HEC clarified that each degree program must incorporate this essential AI course, which can be delivered as an elective, an interdisciplinary subject, or a supportive component within the existing academic framework. The move underscores the importance of AI literacy, emphasizing that its integration is no longer optional but vital in today’s rapidly changing global landscape.
“AI has become a groundbreaking force shaping the 21st century,” HEC stated. The initiative aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to leverage AI tools effectively in their fields, thereby boosting their academic and professional growth.
