Unknown gunmen shot and killed 10 people and injured 10 more in a township outside Johannesburg, according to police officials Sunday. This marks the second mass shooting in South Africa this month. The attack occurred in Bekkersdal, a neighborhood located 25 miles southwest of Johannesburg, though the exact motive remains unclear. Authorities reported that some victims were randomly shot along the streets by unidentified assailants. Brigadier Brenda Muridili, spokesperson for the Gauteng province police, stated, “We don’t have details on the identities of those killed.” The incident took place near a tavern or informal bar in Bekkersdal, a poor area close to several major South African gold mines. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Just days prior, on December 6, gunmen raided a hostel near Pretoria, killing 12 people, including a three-year-old child. Police indicated the shooting happened at a location illegally selling alcohol. South Africa, with a population of 63 million, struggles with a high crime rate, including one of the world’s highest murder rates.
