Telecom providers announced the launch of 5G connectivity in select regions following the issuance of spectrum licenses during an event in Islamabad, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addressed attendees. Last week, the government completed a spectrum auction in Islamabad, selling 480 MHz for $507 million. Three companies competed for the 2,600 MHz band, which is crucial for 5G services.
The license agreements were signed by Brig (Retired) Aamir Shahzad, director general of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Licensing, alongside senior representatives from the three telecom companies.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the deployment of 5G spectrum as a significant milestone for Pakistan, anticipating benefits across agriculture, technology, and industry sectors. He emphasized that the auction process was transparent despite some legal hurdles and appreciated the efforts of Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar for their cooperation in resolving legal challenges.
Highlighting recent government transactions, such as the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines, Shehbaz Sharif said these were conducted transparently, setting new standards for the nation. He congratulated the telecom firms on securing spectrum rights and expressed optimism that 5G would soon reach both urban and rural areas. He stressed the importance of acting swiftly to ensure young people can enjoy modern technological advancements.
Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja noted that the spectrum capacity increased from 274 MHz to 480 MHz, which will substantially boost internet speeds in the upcoming months. She added that while 5G has been launched for the first time in Pakistan, improvements to existing 4G services will also be made.
Hafeez ur Rehman, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, stated that Pakistan now leads the region in spectrum capacity.
Earlier, the prime minister observed the signing of license agreements by the telecom providers.
