Files reveal over 33,000 pages related to Jeffrey Epstein, including videos of apparent victim interviews and audio recordings from Florida investigations. Many of these documents had been released previously, prompting criticism from Democrats. A GOP-led House committee announced the release, aiming to end efforts by bipartisan lawmakers to compel a full vote on the matter. Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019, remains a contentious figure, especially for supporters of former President Donald Trump, amid widespread conspiracy theories. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that a majority of Americans and Trump Republicans believe the government is hiding details about Epstein’s case.
The released files primarily consist of court documents and previously available information. Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern of Massachusetts criticized the release, stating that “almost everything Republicans claim to have released has already been made public.” Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie and California Democrat Ro Khanna have proposed legislation requiring the Justice Department to disclose all unclassified Epstein-related records, including those stored by the FBI and U.S. attorneys’ offices. Massie announced plans to proceed with a press conference alongside Epstein victims, despite the recent document dump.
House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the legislative measure, saying it was “poorly drafted” because it lacked protections for victims’ identities. He also described the effort as “moot” due to the ongoing work of the House Oversight Committee, which has already published thousands of pages of files. Johnson expressed confidence that the current disclosures were sufficient to achieve the intended goal.
Among the materials released are at least eight videos of police interviews with victims, dating back to 2005 and 2006. One video features a girl, whose face and name are obscured, stating Epstein paid her $350 for a massage and sex when she was 17. In another, a victim recounts that Epstein had girls remove their clothes for massages. Additional records include audio from the Florida investigation, including an interview with a victim whose identifying details were redacted. The committee has issued subpoenas to the DOJ and Epstein’s estate, and has scheduled a deposition with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s convicted accomplice.
