Google has agreed to provide its Gemini AI tools to U.S. government agencies at nearly no cost, announced the government on Thursday. This move aims to accelerate the integration of advanced technology into government operations and streamline daily tasks.

The “Gemini for Government” suite from Google, which includes AI and cloud computing services, is designed to help federal agencies adopt new technologies more swiftly. The General Services Administration (GSA) stated that this initiative will facilitate faster AI deployment across the U.S. government.

“Gemini for Government offers federal agencies access to our comprehensive AI innovation platform,” said Google CEO Sundar Pichai. “This enables them to fulfill their critical missions more effectively.”

The AI tools provided encompass capabilities such as generating videos, images, ideas, and digital “agents” that can independently handle complex responsibilities. Agents like these are built to boost efficiency and support mission-critical work.

Agencies will only pay a minimal fee—less than a dollar—for these AI services. This arrangement builds on a prior agreement where Google supplied its Workspace software to the government at a significant discount, according to the GSA.

“Federal agencies can now greatly enhance their operations by utilizing the tools in Gemini for Government,” stated GSA Acting Administrator Michael Rigas.

This announcement follows shortly after OpenAI, a competitor, revealed that it would allow the U.S. government access to a specialized version of ChatGPT aimed at businesses for just one dollar over a year. OpenAI stated that providing government workers with secure, powerful AI tools could help solve problems more efficiently and serve more people.

Earlier this year, the Department of Defense awarded OpenAI a $200 million contract to develop generative AI solutions for military purposes. The startup highlighted potential applications, such as improving administrative processes like healthcare delivery for service members and enhancing cybersecurity defenses.
