The technology sector has been gradually moving into what can be called the “agentic AI” age. In simple terms, this means an AI system can handle complex, multi-step tasks on your behalf. For example, you might instruct it to “reserve a table for six at the closest ramen restaurant with at least a 4-star rating this Wednesday.” That’s exactly the kind of function Gemini will perform within AI Mode—and it’s just the beginning. When you next use Google Search, you’ll notice that it can do much more than just provide a list of links.
You can specify that your schedule is tight and that you need a reservation within two hours. It’s reminiscent of those ultra-smart virtual assistants portrayed in science fiction films. Google is rolling out this feature starting today in the US, the UK, and India, with plans to expand globally soon.
What’s New in Google Search?
Earlier this year, Google introduced a feature called AI Mode within Search. Instead of presenting a standard list of links, it now offers direct answers to your questions, similar to AI chatbots like Gemini or ChatGPT. This shift means you can get comprehensive responses without needing to click through multiple websites.
Now, with AI Mode, Google’s capabilities extend beyond answering questions. It can perform multi-step actions, saving you the hassle of navigating various sites and clicking through multiple pages. For instance, if you want to book a restaurant reservation, you simply type your preferences, and AI Mode will jump into action—filling in the reservation details and directing you straight to the booking page.
Google’s new AI-driven approach not only provides answers but also acts on your commands. Say you’re in a hurry to find a restaurant with available reservation slots; AI Mode will search across multiple booking platforms like OpenTable, Resy, Tock, and others, then present you with available options tailored to your needs.
How Does It Work?
You might recall Project Mariner, showcased earlier this year during the Google I/O developer conference. It’s an advanced version of Gemini capable of managing web tasks through natural voice conversations. Google is now integrating similar technology into Search, enabling you to speak your requests and have the system act on them by leveraging data from Search, Maps, and Google’s Knowledge Graph. Think of it as a conversational agent powered by Google Search and Gemini.
For example, if you’re craving Bao Buns and ask the system to find a breakfast spot, it will remember your preference for steamed buns and prioritize restaurants that serve them. This makes your experience more personalized over time.
What’s Next?
Currently, Google has partnered with popular reservation and event platforms like OpenTable, Resy, Tock, Ticketmaster, StubHub, SeatGeek, and Booksy. While the initial focus is on making restaurant reservations, there are plans to expand AI Mode’s capabilities to include booking event tickets and scheduling local services.
In the near future, AI Mode will be able to learn from your activity history. So, if you recently enjoyed Bao Buns, your next booking request will automatically prioritize places known for serving the dish. This makes your digital assistant more intuitive and tailored to your preferences over time.
