Google introduced an upgraded version of its viral Nano Banana image generation model on Thursday, emphasizing improved speed to attract more users to its AI tools. The new model, named Nano Banana 2, is now integrated into various products, including the Gemini app, AI Mode, Search’s Lens features, and Flow, its AI-driven video platform, according to the company owned by Alphabet.
This rollout marks another step in Google’s push to lead the AI race, especially as it seeks to better position itself against OpenAI’s ChatGPT following a series of early setbacks. The company’s efforts seem to be paying off, with its stock soaring nearly 50% over the past half-year.
In August, Google launched Nano Banana’s AI image editor, which quickly went viral. Within four days in September, the Gemini app attracted 13 million new users, and by mid-October, it had generated over five billion images. The company then released an enhanced version called Nano Banana Pro in November.
Nano Banana 2 leverages Gemini’s faster and more affordable “Flash” models, enabling quicker image creation and editing while offering improved adherence to user instructions and sharper details. The success of the Gemini 3 AI model, introduced in November, has significantly increased engagement, helping the Gemini app reach over 750 million monthly active users by the end of December.
