Dozens of countries, including the United States and China, called for “secure, trustworthy, and robust” artificial intelligence in a declaration released Saturday following a major summit in New Delhi.
“Advancing secure, trustworthy, and robust AI is essential to building trust and maximizing social and economic benefits,” the declaration, signed by 86 nations and two international organizations, stated.
While it did not commit to specific actions, the declaration emphasized several voluntary, non-binding initiatives, such as promoting international collaboration on AI research.
“We believe that the true potential of AI can only be realized when its benefits are shared globally,” the statement from the five-day event highlighted.
The declaration also described the emergence of generative AI as “a turning point in technological development.”
The AI Impact Summit, which drew tens of thousands of attendees including leading tech CEOs, marked the fourth annual global forum focused on managing generative AI and was the first to be hosted by a developing country.
Notably, the U.S., the world’s leading AI nation, did not sign the summit’s previous year’s statement.
Top discussions during the summit included the societal advantages of multilingual AI translation, potential job disruptions, and the significant energy demands of data centers.
Acknowledging the increasing energy, infrastructure, and natural resource requirements of AI, the declaration stressed the importance of developing energy-efficient AI systems.
Experts had previously noted that the summit’s broad scope and vague commitments in past editions held in France, South Korea, and Britain would likely prevent firm commitments this time.
The declaration also emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing security risks associated with AI.
“Recognizing the significance of security in AI systems, industry-led voluntary measures, technical solutions, and appropriate policies are vital to fostering innovation while safeguarding the public interest,” the statement concluded.
