Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old democratic socialist, made history by becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York City, winning decisively over former Governor Andrew Cuomo. The victory was celebrated worldwide, as supporters gathered at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre on election night, with many beyond the city expressing their joy.
Despite facing intense criticism from conservative media outlets and even from President Donald Trump over his policies and Muslim background, Mamdani’s campaign energized the city. His supporters’ enthusiasm remained strong, and they erupted in cheers when his win was announced.
Notable figures from outside New York, including former President Bill Clinton, joined in the celebrations. Clinton took to X (formerly Twitter), congratulating Mamdani and expressing hope that he will help build a more just, affordable, and better city.
British politician Jeremy Corbyn, MP for Islington North, also praised Mamdani for inspiring a grassroots movement, calling the victory a seismic moment not only for New Yorkers but for people everywhere who believe in hope and humanity’s potential to overcome adversity.
