Ghost of Tsushima marked a phenomenal conclusion to the PS4 era. Sucker Punch made a bold decision to step away from its established franchises like Infamous and Sly Cooper to embrace a fresh concept grounded in history, focusing on the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. Naturally, fans anticipated a continuation of the narrative, as that was merely a fragment of the overall conflict. A sequel is indeed on the horizon, but in a form that might surprise many. Introducing Ghost of Yotei, which is set to make significant innovations while remaining faithful to the series’ core values. Similar to titles like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Marvel’s Wolverine, this new game holds many secrets waiting to be uncovered. Let’s explore what this upcoming PS5 game has in store for us.

There’s a possibility that Ghost of Yotei will also be available on PC, but it won’t be included among the upcoming titles for Xbox Series X or Nintendo Switch.

Release Date

On April 23, Sony unexpectedly released a trailer announcing that Ghost of Yotei will launch on October 2, 2025.

Platforms

As you might expect, Ghost of Yotei will debut exclusively on PlayStation 5. However, historically, PlayStation has frequently released its major single-player titles on PC after a year or more. While this is expected for Ghost of Yotei, we await official confirmation before making assumptions.

The inaugural trailer for Ghost of Yotei served as a surprising highlight during the September 2024 State of Play event.

With striking black-and-white visuals, the trailer establishes a tone that transports viewers to the new setting of Mount Yotei in 1603. We are introduced to a new protagonist as she journeys through breathtaking landscapes, ultimately revealing that she faces off against a wolf. With her blades lowered, the two share a moment of contemplation as a familiar breeze nudges them forward.

An accompanying blog post unveiled that the new Ghost is named Atsu; however, further plot details remain under wraps. Set over 300 years after the first game, it’s unlikely that Mongols will return as the main adversaries, and instead, a new threat will be explored.

It was revealed that Atsu seeks vengeance against those responsible for her family’s demise, undertaking various tasks to earn funds for her quest.

The Onryo’s List trailer depicted the tragic events that led to Atsu’s situation, showcasing her family’s murder and her near-fatal injuries. This trailer also features gameplay moments, indicating that players will experience flashbacks to Atsu’s past, allowing insights into her backstory and the factors surrounding her family’s loss.

Atsu is tasked with eliminating six targets, each identified by a unique codename: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito.

Gameplay

While the initial trailer provided glimpses of gameplay, it remains difficult to discern details due to the anticipated minimalist HUD similar to its predecessor. However, we know that horse riding and exploration across various environments—from sunlit fields to snowy peaks—will return, with even greater depth.

With six main adversaries, players can navigate and pursue leads to hunt down the culprits of Atsu’s family’s tragedy.

Dueling will also return, though specifics on combat, traversal, or stealth remain to be seen. However, these elements are expected to be enhanced and expanded. Blog updates hinted at new mechanics, gameplay enhancements, and additional weaponry. We caught a brief look at some weapons, such as a rifle and a kusarigama.

Further information confirmed new weapon additions, including the odachi and the previously mentioned dual katanas. The second trailer featured more gameplay using these weapons, plus showcased a spear. The wolf companion makes a return, indicating its possible role in assisting during encounters.

Platforming mechanics will also feature grappling hooks, sliding mechanics, and rope walking.

Additionally, activities from Tsushima will reappear, alongside new options like setting up camp for stargazing and recuperation.

The July 2025 State of Play provided a deeper look into Ghost of Yotei gameplay, setting the scene that Atsu is perceived as an onryo—a vengeful spirit from Japanese lore—due to her relentless pursuit of the Yotei six. The gameplay is visually striking, with realistic shading and dynamic weather reflecting stunning scenery.

Atsu can transition between past and present seamlessly, allowing exploration of key locations from her childhood.

Sucker Punch intends for Ghost of Yotei to feature an exceptionally open world with ample opportunities for exploration. As players wander, they’ll encounter various clues that lead to further discoveries, categorized into cards to indicate the challenges and rewards ahead.

New side missions include bounty hunting, where players can select targets for cash rewards via bounty boards.

Unlockable abilities will be discovered at Altars of Reflection, categorized into Core, ONryo, Melee, Revenge, and Wolf skills, each supporting individual progression. Bamboo challenges and hot springs also make a return, serving similar purposes as before.

In addition to the weapons discussed earlier, spears will be another option. Each weapon will be effective against specific enemy types and can be upgraded with unique skills. Players can switch weapons mid-combat with a button press.

The enigmatic wolf ally appears alongside Atsu in combat sequences, suggesting its role as a strategic partner.
