Germany plans to deploy 13 soldiers to Greenland starting Thursday for a reconnaissance mission alongside other European countries, according to the German government and defense ministry. This move follows President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for Washington to take control of the island.
The operation, initiated at Denmark’s request, will run from Thursday to Saturday with the goal of exploring potential military support to enhance regional security. Possible activities include maritime surveillance, the defense ministry noted.
Trump has emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance and mineral wealth, asserting that U.S. control is necessary to prevent Russian or Chinese occupation. His comments have strained diplomatic ties with Europe, with earlier Wednesday seeing Sweden and Norway announcing their own plans to send military personnel to the island.
