France Detains Suspect in Saint-Omer Church Fire

A man has been arrested in connection with the large fire that broke out at the 19th-century Church of the Immaculate Conception in Saint-Omer, northern France, leading to the collapse of its bell tower, prosecutors announced.

The fire erupted early Monday morning, causing significant damage to the historic church, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. By nightfall, social media videos captured the church’s steeple engulfed in flames.

Authorities detained a suspect on Monday evening, with Saint-Omer prosecutor Mehdi Benbouzid confirming that the individual had a prior record for similar offenses. The suspect, who had been staying in a hostel before the incident, was being questioned on Tuesday morning.

The investigation uncovered “traces of forced entry” within the church, including damage to a stained-glass window, Benbouzid noted. Prosecutors are considering criminal charges for “destruction of property by dangerous means” due to the religious nature of the site.
