An armed assault on a courthouse in Iran’s volatile southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals and injured 13 others, according to Iranian media reports.
Three attackers were also killed during subsequent clashes with security personnel, according to a high-ranking police official cited by the state news agency IRNA.
The official noted that among the casualties was a mother and her child, both of whom were killed when the gunmen threw a hand grenade into the courthouse in Zahedan, the provincial capital.
The Baluch human rights organization HAALVSH, citing eyewitness accounts, reported that multiple judiciary staff members and security personnel were either wounded or killed when the assailants stormed the judges’ chambers.
Clashes between security forces and armed groups—often separatists demanding greater rights and autonomy—are a common occurrence in Sistan-Baluchestan province.
