A man stabbed nine people to death overnight in the capital city of Suriname, Paramaribo, according to police officials. The victims included five children, and the suspect, who appeared to be experiencing mental health issues, was wounded and detained by authorities. Among the victims, four of the man’s own children died during the attack, which occurred in and around his residence.
Prior to the assault, the suspect reportedly had an argument with his wife over the phone. He then stabbed his 11-year-old daughter inside their kitchen, repeatedly, 44 times. The police indicated that the attacker used a sharp weapon to carry out the killings, and that officers were forced to shoot him after he attacked them with the same weapon. He sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and remains hospitalized under police supervision. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
Police spokespersons confirmed that the incident was in Hadji Iding Soemitaweg neighborhood in the district of Commewijne. They also stated that two other people—one adult and one child—were critically injured and taken to the hospital.
Local residents and media reports suggest that the suspect was dealing with mental health issues. Suriname’s President, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, responded to the tragedy via Facebook, saying, “In a time when family and friends should lean on each other, we are faced with the heartbreaking reality of another dark chapter. A father who takes the lives of his own children—and in the process, harms his neighbors. I send my deepest condolences and hope for strength and comfort for all those mourning in this unimaginably difficult period.”
