A fire in a building in Indonesia’s capital city resulted in at least 20 fatalities, according to authorities. The blaze reportedly ignited in the afternoon when a battery on the first floor of a seven-story office building in central Jakarta exploded, causing the fire to spread upwards.
Officials stated that the recovered victims included five men and fifteen women, with one individual being pregnant. Most of those who died appeared not to have suffered burns but likely succumbed to suffocation. The deceased have been transported to the police hospital for autopsies.
Firefighters are currently searching the scene for additional residents who may still be trapped inside. Efforts are concentrated on identifying the victims found so far, while also working to cool down the building due to intense heat and smoke on multiple floors.
Incidents like this are not uncommon in Indonesia, which in 2023 experienced a tragic explosion at a nickel-processing plant in eastern Indonesia that resulted in 12 deaths and 39 injuries.
