Apple plans to introduce a hypertension detection feature on its smartwatch next week, following approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday, according to Bloomberg News. Neither Apple nor the FDA responded immediately to requests for comment.
During its September 9 event, Apple showcased a blood pressure monitor integrated into the latest Apple Watch and also announced a new lineup of iPhones, including a slimmer iPhone Air. Once the feature receives full regulatory approval, it is expected to assist approximately one million people, although it won’t detect every instance of high blood pressure.
The feature, now available in 150 countries, will utilize data from the watch’s optical heart sensor to monitor how blood vessels respond to heartbeats over a 30-day period, Apple explained. It will be compatible with several Apple Watch models—including the Series 9, Series 10, Series 11—as well as the more premium Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 models, Bloomberg reported.
