Director Joseph Kosinski aims to create the most authentic racing film to date with F1. After viewing the latest footage featuring Brad Pitt in action, it seems Kosinski may have succeeded.
Apple Original Films has unveiled the official trailer for F1, a sports drama from the visionary behind Top Gun: Maverick. The story follows Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a racer seeking redemption after a career-threatening accident in the 1990s left a mark on his professional life. Once hailed for his potential, Hayes is now recognized as “the greatest that never was.”
Three decades later, Sonny is offered a second shot by Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), his former teammate and the owner of the struggling Apex Grand Prix team (APXGP). Ruben persuades Sonny to join the team, partnering with rising star Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), who has much to learn. As someone labeled an “old school cowboy” and a “lone wolf,” Sonny must come to grips with the fact that success in Formula One hinges on teamwork.
“We all lose our jobs if you can’t pull off a miracle,” warns Kate, played by Kerry Condon, an employee at APXGP.
The trailer closes with thrilling racing sequences showcasing Sonny’s remarkable driving skills as he skillfully speeds down the track. Yet, F1 doesn’t shy away from depicting the inherent dangers of the sport, hinting at a potentially catastrophic crash.

“How do you think I’d feel if you die on the track?” Ruben’s voice echoes as he watches one of the cars spin out of control.
Other notable cast members include Tobias Menzies and Kim Bodnia.
Kosinski directs F1 from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, based on a story developed by the two. The film is produced by Pitt, Kosinski, Jerry Bruckheimer, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Chad Oman, and seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Although F1 tells a fictional story, filming took place at renowned Grand Prix venues over the past two seasons. Many real-life Formula One drivers, including Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Oscar Piastri, will make appearances.
F1 stands as one of the most ambitious projects of the summer blockbuster season. Its rumored budget is around $300 million, though both Kosinski and Bruckheimer have questioned this figure. Regardless of the actual expenses, F1 represents a high-stakes venture founded on an original premise, increasing its level of risk.
F1 is set to hit theaters on June 27, distributed by Warner Bros. under the banner of Apple Original Films.
