A blast at an explosives manufacturing plant resulted in at least 17 fatalities and left 18 others injured in Maharashtra, India, on Sunday. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred in Nagpur, approximately 500 miles from the state capital, Mumbai. Rescue efforts are underway, with officials advising that search and recovery operations are ongoing. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, described the event as “extremely tragic,” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the situation “deeply distressing,” extending wishes for a swift recovery to those affected. An official investigation has been launched into the cause of the explosion.
This tragic event follows a similar disaster in Andhra Pradesh the day before, where a firecracker factory explosion claimed 21 lives. India frequently faces industrial accidents, often attributed to lax safety protocols and inadequate enforcement, leading to recurring fatalities in such incidents, including a notable fireworks factory blast last year.
