A private jet caught fire and crashed during takeoff from a Maine airport, leaving eight people on board. The U.S. aviation authorities have not yet identified the victims or provided their conditions.
The crash involved a twin-engine Bombardier Challenger 600 that happened at Bangor International Airport around 7:45 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). An investigation into the incident is underway.
Limited details have emerged, but a government insider told Reuters that a substantial fire broke out following the crash.
Weather conditions included light snowfall before the accident, but officials haven’t suggested that weather contributed to the crash. Maine was under a winter storm warning, including Bangor, the state’s third-largest city.
The plane had just arrived in Maine from Texas. The registered owner’s address is shared with Arnold & Itkin, a personal injury law firm in Houston. FAA records indicate the aircraft was put into service in April 2020.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board plan to investigate the incident.
