On August 27, 2025, on the outskirts of Maidan Wardak Province, a passenger bus overturned on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and 27 injuries, according to authorities reported to AFP. The incident occurred due to what officials describe as the driver’s negligence, with fatalities confirmed and injured individuals receiving medical treatment at local hospitals, though their exact conditions are not detailed.
Traffic accidents like this are frequent across Afghanistan, largely because of poor road conditions stemming from decades of conflict, reckless driving habits on highways, and insufficient enforcement of traffic regulations. Just a week prior, a tragic crash in western Herat Province claimed the lives of 78 people, including over a dozen children, when a bus ferrying returnees from Iran collided with a motorcycle and a truck. Additionally, last December, two separate incidents involving fuel tankers and trucks on a central Afghanistan highway resulted in at least 52 deaths.
