Clayface has officially secured a director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Watkins has been chosen to helm Clayface for DC Studios. DC co-CEO James Gunn reportedly met with Watkins last Thursday, and negotiations are currently underway.
Watkins recently directed Speak No Evil, a remake of the acclaimed Danish psychological thriller from 2022. The film, released in October, went on to earn $76 million globally against a budget of $15 million.
Clayface received the green light in December, with Mike Flanagan attached to write the script. Flanagan, known for his work in the horror genre, could not take the directing role due to his commitments to a TV adaptation of Carrie and a new Exorcist film.
The character of Clayface, a shape-shifting villain, is primarily known as a foe of Batman. However, the film is likely to focus more on horror elements rather than establishing direct connections with the Batman saga. According to THR’s coverage, Clayface will tell the story of a struggling B-movie actor who, in his quest for relevance, injects himself with a substance that allows him to alter his appearance, transforming him into a figure made of clay.

The film’s budget is estimated at $40 million.
No cast announcements have been made as of yet. Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran previously noted that voice actors in DC’s animated projects might also reprise their roles in live-action adaptations. For instance, Frank Grillo voiced Rick Flag Sr. in the animated series Creature Commandos and is set to play live-action Flag in Superman and Peacemaker season two. Currently, Alan Tudyk voices Clayface in both Creature Commandos and Harley Quinn.
Production for Clayface is expected to begin later this year, with Gunn and Safran producing alongside The Batman’s Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris.
Clayface is slated for theatrical release on September 11, 2026.
