Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Chrono Trigger, and Square Enix is honoring this milestone with exciting announcements about the franchise’s future and a series of events in the coming days. The celebration kicks off with a 33-hour live performance, which will be broadcasted on YouTube starting on March 13 at 7 PM PT and continuing until March 15 at approximately 4 AM PT.
Square Enix shared this news via a post on X, stating, “Today marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger’s release in 1995… To celebrate, we will be launching various projects over the next year that extend beyond the realm of gaming as a sign of our appreciation for everyone who has enjoyed Chrono Trigger.”
Unsurprisingly, the mention of “various projects” has sparked excitement among fans, many of whom have longed for a remake. Enthusiasts dream of experiencing Chrono Trigger in a fresh incarnation, potentially resembling the stunning HD-2D visuals of Octopath Traveler.

The prospects for a remake—or even a re-release—are quite promising. Although Chrono Trigger is available on Steam and mobile devices, it has yet to be launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, or Nintendo Switch. Its sequel, Chrono Cross, saw a revival in 2022 with The Radical Dreamers Edition, featuring enhanced graphics, a fast-forward option, and various other improvements.
Moreover, there are numerous titles that evoke a similar essence to Chrono Trigger. For instance, Sabotage Studio’s Sea of Stars draws heavy inspiration from the classic, and excitingly, it has new downloadable content on the horizon.
Square Enix mentioned that their upcoming projects aim to “transcend the world of gaming,” which opens doors to a wide array of possibilities, from an anime adaptation to board games or trading card games.
While there’s no certainty regarding the release of a remake, the anniversary of a beloved game is a prime opportunity for such an announcement. Chrono Trigger has left a lasting impact on the RPG genre, and a revival could be well-deserved.
