A white supremacist who murdered 51 Muslim worshippers and wounded dozens at two mosques in New Zealand is scheduled to begin an appeal hearing on their sentence this Monday.
Brenton Tarrant, 35, carried out the attack on Christchurch mosques in March 2019, marking the country’s deadliest mass shooting.
He was found guilty on 51 murder charges, 40 attempted murder counts, and one terrorism offense. Tarrant is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. This court ruling was a historical milestone as it was the first time a New Zealand court sentenced someone to life imprisonment.
An Australian citizen, Tarrant released a racist manifesto just before storming the mosques armed with military-style semi-automatic firearms, firing indiscriminately at Muslims during Friday prayers, and livestreaming the atrocity on Facebook through a head-mounted camera.
This attack shocked New Zealand in peacetime and led the government to swiftly implement stricter gun control laws.
