The phrase “Die Hard on an X” has become a popular way to describe action films with similar storylines. For example, you have Die Hard set on a plane, which is Air Force One, and on a ship, it’s Under Siege. When the setting is a bus, it results in Speed. The latest twist is Die Hard taking place on a submarine, which introduces Subversion, an upcoming action flick featuring Chris Hemsworth.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth is set to star in Subversion, a submarine thriller produced by Amazon MGM Studios. Patrick Vollrath, known for his short film Everything Will Be Okay, will direct the feature from a screenplay written by Andrew Ferguson.
This film mirrors the spirit of Die Hard, following an optimistic naval commander played by Hemsworth, who finds himself blackmailed by a cartel-like organization. He is forced to pilot a perilous submarine carrying illicit cargo through international waters. As reported by THR, “Caught in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, he must strategize to outsmart blockades and counter various threats both inside and outside the submarine.”
Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce the film through his di Bonaventura Pictures. Filming is scheduled to commence this fall in Australia.
Vollrath’s background includes directing films set in dynamic environments. His directorial debut came with the 2019 action thriller 7500, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a pilot battling Islamic terrorists who hijack the aircraft.
