As of noon today, the combined box office earnings for films released during the 2025 National Day holiday, including advance ticket sales, have surpassed 1.6 billion Chinese yuan (approximately $225 million), according to data from online platforms.
The eight-day holiday, which began on October 1, is traditionally a vibrant period for moviegoers and a fiercely competitive time for theaters across the country.
Dominating this year’s holiday box office is the domestic war epic “The Volunteers: Peace at Last,” the concluding chapter of director Chen Kaige’s trilogy. The film depicts the complex interplay of battlefield conflict and diplomatic negotiations during the Korean War (1950-1953).
Following closely is “Evil Unbound,” a domestic production portraying the brutal crimes carried out by Japanese germ warfare Unit 731 in China during World War II. The movie focuses on the plight of innocent victims imprisoned by the unit and subjected to inhumane experiments such as frostbite, poison gas exposure, and vivisection.
In third place on the holiday chart is “A Writer’s Odyssey II,” the sequel to the 2021 fantasy-action blockbuster. The film follows a novelist navigating a dual crisis unfolding in both the real world and the virtual realm of his creative storytelling.
So far this year, more than 300 films have been released nationwide, spanning genres such as history, comedy, animation, and drama.
