Leaders and lawmakers across the political spectrum reacted with shock and sorrow to the death of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist, commentator, and supporter of former President Donald Trump, who was shot during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
Here are some of their responses:
President Donald Trump
“The great and even legendary Charlie Kirk has passed away. No one understood or connected with America’s youth better than him. He was loved and admired by everyone, especially me, and now he’s no longer with us. Melania and I send our sympathies to his beautiful wife Erika and his family. Charlie, we love you.”
Vice President JD Vance
“May he rest in eternal peace, O Lord.”
Joe Biden, former U.S. President and Democrat
“There’s no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must stop now. Jill and I are praying for Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones.”
Barack Obama, former U.S. president and Democrat
“We don’t yet know what motivated the shooter, but violence like this has no place in a healthy democracy.”
Brooke Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture
“The loss of my dear friend and fellow champion of faith and country, Charlie Kirk, is deeply tragic. While this loss deeply affects his family, it’s a tragedy for all of America — regardless of politics. Abandoning reasoned dialogue and persuasion for violence is a betrayal of everything Charlie stood for and a betrayal of America itself.”
Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel
“Charlie Kirk was murdered for speaking truth and standing up for freedom. A fearless supporter of Israel, he fought against lies and championed Judeo-Christian civilization. I spoke with him just two weeks ago and had invited him to Israel. Sadly, that visit will not happen. We have lost an extraordinary individual. His patriotism and dedication to free speech will leave a lasting legacy.”
Yvette Cooper, UK Foreign Secretary
“I am deeply shocked by Charlie Kirk’s killing in Utah. Political violence has no place in our society. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family.”
Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas (Republican)
“Charlie’s voice inspired millions of young Americans seeking truth and courage. This act of violence is utterly unacceptable in America.”
Donald Trump Jr.
“Love you, brother. You inspired so many to speak out, and we will never be silenced.”
Joe Gruters, Chairman of the Republican National Committee
“Charlie Kirk was a father, husband, and proud patriot who dedicated his life to defending conservative principles and motivating young Americans. Our hearts go out to his wife, children, loved ones, and supporters nationwide. The violence at Utah Valley University that claimed his life is appalling. Both Democrats and Republicans must unite to condemn this brutality; there is no place for it in America.”
Senator Mike Lee, Utah (Republican)
“This murder was a cowardly act of violence — an attack on champions of freedom like Charlie, the students engaged in civil debate, and all Americans striving peacefully to save our nation. The terrorists won’t succeed. Charlie’s legacy will endure.”
