Rain-caused landslides in two areas within Indonesia’s Central Java province last week resulted in at least 18 fatalities, according to officials on Monday, with rescue efforts still underway.
In Cilacap city, a landslide in Cibeunying village buried about a dozen homes, details the disaster response agency. Rescuers faced difficulties because victims were trapped beneath 3 to 8 meters (roughly 10 to 25 feet) of debris. The incident has claimed at least 16 lives, with seven individuals still unaccounted for, said M. Abdullah, the head of the local search and rescue division. Heavy machinery was brought in to excavate mud and rubble, footage from Kompas TV showed on Monday.
Meanwhile, in the Banjarnegara region, a landslide on Saturday resulted in two deaths and 27 people missing. The disaster agency reported that roughly 30 homes and farmland had been damaged by this event.
Indonesia’s rainy season, which commenced in September, is projected to continue through April, heightening the risk of severe rainfall and flooding, the national weather service warned.
